Elie and Earlsferry are located in the East Neuk of Fife and run along a 1 mile sandy beach. Elie Coffee House is located on the High Street of Elie just across from the green. Close by are the Station Buffet bar and the Ship Inn pub and beer garden with spectacular views across the bay to Earlsferry, and for the more adventurous, Elie Watersports. In the other direction towards Earlsferry you will find Elie Golf Club which has many holes which play along the coast and also the Sports Club which boast a popular nine hole course, driving range, tennis courts and bowling green.
Heading towards St Monans (to the east of Elie Harbour ) is Lady's Tower which sits above Ruby Bay, on the east side of Elie Ness, and was built as a changing room for the Lady Anstruther. It is said that Lady Anstruther would bathe in the waters next to Lady's Tower, a servant ringing a bell all the while to ensure locals stayed away.
There are many historic building throughout the villages. One of the oldest, known as the " Castle " stands in South Street and dates back to about 1500. Also in South Street is Gillespie House which was rebuilt in 1870 but kept the " Muckle Yett " doorway of an earlier house on this site. Nearby, and in the High Street is the old Parish Church built in 1639 by Sir William Scott of Ardross. Its Tower, with its interesting octagonal shape, was added later in 1726. Elie house built in 1697 was cursed by a gypsy. The curse stated that only six generations of the residents, the family of Anstruther's, would live in the house, and this is exactly what happened.
Elie is ideally located for easy trips to St Andrews, Dunfermline, Culross, Perth, Edinburgh, Falkland Palace, and all of historic Fife.
Accommodation is provided in the village by a wide variety of bed and breakfasts.
Walks
The East Neuk of Fife is famed for its lovely coastline ad charming villages is one of the most scenic areas in Scotland.
From Elie Coffee House, cross the road and head towards the harbour. Follow the street, (The Toft) as it curves around Elie Bay, past the Ship Inn and continues to the end of the Harbour Breakwater. In the Summer months you can enjoy many watersports at Elie Watersports at the harbour. The Harbour itself dates from the 16th Century and the large building in the corner of the harbour is the old granary building which was re-developed into flats in 2001.
Once you have enjoyed the views of the village from the end of the pier turn back and inland until you come to a gap in the harbour wall (just before the Ship in on the right hand side). Follow the path as it curves around the shore of Wood Haven to Elie Ness, where a footbridge leads to a white light tower which was built in the early 1900's. Elie Ness is made of volcanic rock which comprises blocks of basalt embedded in layers of volcanic ash. The rocks also contain rare crystals of garnet, known locally as "Elie rubies". Follow the coast until you reach Lady's Tower which was built in the 1760s as a bathing house for Lady Janet, wife of the local Laird Sir John Anstruther.
Continue along the costal path towards St Monans. You will pass the ruins of Ardross Castle which dates from 1370, but unfortunately the castle is little more than a pile of rubble. A little further along the coast is Newark Castle which was acquired in 1649 by General David Leslie the Covenanter commander who defeated the Marquis of Montrose at Philiphaugh in 1645. Ahead lies the fishing village of St Monans where you will find the famous Fishermen's church which has a ship dating from the 1800's inside.
Pass the church and turn left up the narrow street beside the burn keep going straight along the path between the burn and the houses to reach the main road( A917) turn left along the pavement. After about half a mile you have two options, if you continue straight ahead, you will arrive back in Elie.
